A new report from intelligence firm Graphika reveals that a Chinese-linked disinformation campaign, "Spamouflage," is intensifying efforts to influence U.S. political discourse ahead of the 2024 elections. Using fake accounts on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, this operation poses as American citizens, spreading anti-Western sentiment and sowing discord on key issues such as gun control and election integrity. Spamouflage has been active since 2019, but its activities have ramped up recently, shifting focus toward criticizing U.S. candidates and exacerbating domestic divisions.
Graphika’s report identified 15 fake accounts on X and one on TikTok claiming to be U.S. voters or activists, with some profiles using AI-generated content. These accounts often shift identities, posing as veterans, Trump supporters, or influencers. One such account, "Harlan Report," gained significant traction before being banned by TikTok and suspended on X. This network aims to exploit sensitive political issues. Though previous efforts were deemed low-impact, the scale and sophistication of recent activities suggest an increasing influence.
Spamouflage’s tactics are part of a broader strategy by China, Russia, and Iran to manipulate American media and public opinion as the 2024 election nears. Although it remains to be seen whether these efforts will have a lasting effect on U.S. political divisions, the report emphasizes these foreign influence operations' expanding scope and reach.
