OpenAI has translated a significant AI benchmark, the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU), into 14 languages to boost the development of non-English AI systems. This move seeks to address the dominance of English in AI training data and encourage more diverse, multilingual AI applications.
The newly translated benchmark covers Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, and Swahili. OpenAI also announced the launch of OpenAI Academy, which will provide grants and technical guidance to developers in low and middle-income countries. This initiative is part of a broader effort to apply AI to solve local challenges and stimulate innovation outside traditionally dominant markets.
These announcements coincide with CEO Sam Altman’s participation in the UN General Assembly week in New York, where he will meet with international leaders to discuss AI’s global impact.
