Google’s June Pixel Update Expands Gemini AI to Budget Phones and More

Google’s June update for Pixel devices is a game-changer, especially for those who want to leverage AI technology on more affordable phones. The update starts today and includes several enhancements that benefit users across the Pixel lineup, from improved device tracking to advanced photography tools.

Expanding AI Capabilities

The highlight of this update is the inclusion of the mobile-ready Gemini Nano model, previously exclusive to Pixel 8 Pro owners, now available on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8A devices. This move brings advanced AI features to a broader audience, allowing more users to experience capabilities like Summarize in Recorder and Smart Reply. However, users of the slightly lower-specced Pixel 8 and 8A must enable these features through the developer options. Seang Chau, Google Devices & Services Software Vice President, explained on the Made by Google podcast that this toggle ensures users know the potential impact on their device's performance.

Enhanced Device Tracking

For those prone to misplacing their phones, the Find My Device feature has been updated to locate a phone even when it’s off or the battery is drained for up to 23 hours. This update is exclusive to the Pixel 8 family, adding a significant layer of security and peace of mind for users.

Improved Photography Tools

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the new updates that enhance control and quality. Pixel 6 and newer devices, including the Pixel Fold, now support identifying the “best moment” in a photo using HDR Plus. Additionally, users with Pixel Fold and Pro versions of Pixel 6, 7, and 8 can manually select which camera lens to use, offering greater flexibility and precision in capturing images.

Additional Features

The update also introduces a reverse phone number search shortcut in the call log, making it easier to identify unknown callers. This feature is available on Pixel 6 and newer devices, as well as the Pixel Fold. Moreover, Pixel 8 Pro users and those with Gemini Nano enabled in developer settings will benefit from detailed, downloadable recorded conversation summaries, enhancing productivity and information management.

Display Port Output

Another notable addition is the support for Display Port output via the USB-C jack, available on the Pixel 8 family. This allows users to display their phone's interface on a larger screen, making it ideal for presentations and extended work sessions.

Conclusion

Google’s June Pixel update is packed with enhancements that cater to a wide range of users. By extending AI capabilities to more affordable phones, improving device tracking, and offering advanced photography tools, Google ensures that Pixel users can enjoy a richer, more secure, and versatile smartphone experience, whether they have the latest model or an older device. Pixel owners have much to look forward to as these features begin to roll out.
