Google Photos Simplifies Locked Folder Access on Android and iOS

Google Photos has updated its app on Android and iOS to make accessing the Locked Folder much faster. This change comes after the introduction of cross-device sync last year, further enhancing user convenience.

Previously, users had to navigate multiple steps to reach the Locked Folder. They would open Google Photos, go to the Library tab, tap Utilities, and then scroll to the Organize Your Library heading. This cumbersome process has been simplified significantly. Now, the "Locked" option appears directly next to Favorites, Archive, and Trash, allowing for much quicker access.

While the old method kept the Locked Folder less visible, which had its security advantages, the new placement makes it easier for users to find and use. On the web version of Google Photos, the private folder is conveniently located in the navigation drawer.

Additionally, the functionality previously found in Utilities has been moved to the ‘plus’ sheet in the app bar. This includes options like "Create new" for Albums, Collages, Highlight videos, Cinematic photos, Animations, and Photo books, as well as "Get photos" with shortcuts for sharing with a partner and importing from other sources.

The update is available on Android (version 6.89) and iOS, enhancing the user experience across both platforms. Despite these changes, the Google Photos Library tab remains. However, Google is testing a redesign of Collections, which could make accessing on-device folders more cumbersome.
