Google Messages Introduces Colorful Customization: A Fresh Way to Personalize RCS Chats

In an exciting development for users seeking more personalized communication experiences, Google Messages is gradually introducing a new feature that allows for customizing RCS chat themes. This eagerly awaited update promises to infuse a splash of colour into your conversations, making each chat uniquely yours.

Initially spotted by the keen eyes of Android Police, this feature is currently visible in Google Messages versions ranging from 20240228 to 20240308. However, the rollout is in its early stages, and availability may vary due to what appears to be a server-side update mechanism. For instance, testing on a Pixel 8 equipped with the latest 20240308 version of Messages revealed the presence of this new customization option.

For those eager to explore this new aesthetic realm, the feature can be accessed within an RCS chat. RCS chats are identifiable by a small chat bubble icon next to the contact's name. Users can navigate to the 'Change colours' option by tapping the three-dot menu button in the upper-right corner of the screen. This feature seems exclusive to RCS chats, leaving traditional SMS messages in their original hue.

Delving into the 'Change colours' setting unveils an interface adorned with nine colour boxes, each representing a different palette. These range from your device’s default Material You theme to various other vibrant options, including blue, purple, red, and grey. A handy preview box at the interface's pinnacle offers a glimpse into how your chosen theme will animate your chat environment.

Interestingly, when a user opts for a new theme, a notification stating, “You changed the theme,” is generated, accompanied by a button to revise the choice if desired. However, reports from Android Police indicate that this notification might not appear for all chat participants at this stage. Moreover, the Messages for the web platform, which currently lacks theme support, displayed the notification, hinting at potential future integrations.

While the feature's complete functionality and universal availability remain in anticipation, this update heralds a significant leap towards more dynamic and personalized messaging experiences on Google Messages. As the rollout continues, users are encouraged to explore this new option, bringing a personal touch to their digital conversations. Stay tuned for further updates as Google Messages expands its palette of customization options, making every chat not just a conversation but a personal statement.
