According to a recent teardown of the latest Google app beta (v15.29.34.29 beta), Google's AI assistant, Gemini, is set to receive a substantial boost in functionality with the addition of several new extensions. These extensions will enhance Gemini's integration with various Google services, allowing it to perform a wider array of tasks seamlessly.
Gemini already connects with several Google platforms, including Google Flights, Hotels, Maps, Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music. The latest beta reveals that at least six new extensions are on the way, half of which have yet to be officially announced.
One of the most exciting new extensions is Google Home. This extension will enable Gemini to control smart home appliances like lights and switches directly without routing commands through Google Assistant. This direct control is expected to significantly speed up the execution of smart home commands. However, it remains unclear if the Home extension will allow Gemini to manage Home automation, a current limitation users hope will be addressed.
Another unannounced extension is for the Phone app. This will allow Gemini to handle phone call commands internally, bypassing Google Assistant. Although details are sparse, basic commands like "Call [insert name here]" are expected to be supported.
The third unannounced extension, Utilities, will enable Gemini to interact directly with phone settings and apps. Examples include taking photos, opening apps, and adjusting the volume without swiping or tapping. This extension could allow for even more advanced interactions, such as locking the phone, switching to dark mode, or restarting the device. However, these functionalities are speculative at this stage.
Additionally, the APK teardown found references to three more extensions—Google Calendar, Keep, and Tasks—which were previously announced at Google I/O 2024. It is unclear whether these will be standalone extensions or integrated into the existing Workspace extension.
The rollout timeline for these extensions remains to be determined. Google may release them all at once or stagger their introduction over time. Users are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as these new capabilities become available.
