Brazil Ends X Ban Following Misinformation Crackdown Compliance

After more than a month of restrictions, Brazil's Supreme Court lifted the ban on Elon Musk's social media platform, X. Justice Alexandre de Moraes blocked the platform, formerly known as Twitter, on August 30 after X failed to comply with court orders. The ruling came as part of Brazil’s efforts to combat misinformation.

The court reinstated X after the company met two key conditions: blocking accounts that spread false information and appointing a legal representative in Brazil. Additionally, X paid a fine of 28.6 million reals ($5.1 million) as required by the court.

Brazil's crackdown on misinformation had placed X under scrutiny, leading to Musk’s refusal to comply with the orders. Musk previously criticized the Brazilian judge, accusing him of undermining free speech for political reasons. In April, Moraes had also launched an investigation into Musk for obstruction of justice.

The ban reversal resolves the ongoing tensions between Musk and Brazilian authorities. However, the situation underscores broader debates about social media platforms' role in combating misinformation.
