Apple iOS 18 Rolls Out: What’s New for iPhone Users - Morning Toasts

Apple iOS 18 is now available for iPhone users with compatible devices. The new operating system offers increased customization and other features. However, users must wait for an update to access Apple's new AI features, dubbed "Apple Intelligence."

The new iOS 18 launched on September 16, before the September 20 release of Apple's iPhone 16 models. Historically, the software becomes available at 10 a.m. PT or 1 p.m. ET. However, download times may be slower due to high demand.

iOS 18 is compatible with the iPhone SE (second generation and later) and models starting from the iPhone XR.

The update includes several customization options, including new ways to personalize the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center. The Photos app is also refreshed to help users manage their collections more efficiently and filter out unwanted content like screenshots. Messages will offer new customization features, including scheduled texts, emoji-based replies, and text effects. Additionally, iOS 18 will support Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging, allowing for richer media and read receipts when texting non-iMessage users.

While the operating system offers several updates, the AI-based features under "Apple Intelligence" will arrive in beta form next month. This includes tools like AI-assisted writing, photo editing, and summarization. However, these features will initially be available only in U.S. English on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models. Future AI functionalities, such as the Image Playground art generator and custom AI-generated emojis, are expected to arrive by the end of the year, with some features potentially delayed until 2025.
