Apple AirPods Could Feature Built-in Cameras for AR by 2026

Apple is reportedly working on a new version of AirPods equipped with built-in infrared cameras, set to be mass-produced by 2026. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo highlighted this development, which aims to enhance Apple's augmented reality (AR) headsets, including the Vision Pro goggles, by providing a more immersive spatial audio experience.

Integrating infrared cameras into AirPods could make Apple's spatial-computing experience more lifelike. For instance, users turning their heads in a specific direction could experience an emphasized sound source from that direction, enhancing the realism of the audio experience. Additionally, these cameras could enable "in-air" gestures, similar to the technology behind Apple's FaceID.

This rumour aligns with a previous report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, suggesting that Apple is exploring camera-powered AirPods. If realized, this would continue Apple's trend of evolving its AirPods from simple earbuds into multifunctional devices, adding features like wireless connectivity, noise cancellation, head tracking, touch controls, and voice commands over the years.

While Apple has yet to release AirPods with health-tracking features, the idea has been floated around. However, attempts by other brands, such as Amazfit with its Powerbuds Pro, have yet to be successful, and even dedicated fitness brands like Fitbit and Garmin have avoided integrating advanced health-tracking technology into earbuds.
