Amazon CEO: Tech Giant Will Stay Top Buyer of Renewable Energy Amid AI Boom

According to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon expects to remain the world’s top purchaser of renewable energy for several years. His remarks, made at a private New York event alongside Amazon's sustainability chief Kara Hurst, underscore the tech giant’s role in driving green energy adoption. This comes at a time when AI technologies are increasing electricity demand.

Jassy’s comments highlight Amazon’s long-term focus on renewable investments, particularly in solar and wind power, as part of its Climate Pledge, an initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. The company has also recently expanded its energy strategy to include nuclear power, inking a deal with Talen Energy to potentially use atomic energy to power its AWS data centers in Pennsylvania.

Jassy emphasized the critical need for businesses to invest in alternative energy sources if they are serious about reducing carbon emissions. His statements follow Microsoft’s recent agreement with Constellation Energy to revive a nuclear reactor at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island, underscoring the growing role of nuclear energy in tech’s clean energy plans.

Big Tech, spearheaded by Amazon, has dominated renewable energy deals, accounting for 62% of contracted capacity between February 2023 and February 2024. With AI systems consuming significantly more power than traditional services, these investments in renewable energy have become both a financial and environmental necessity.

Jassy’s position reinforces that while AI reshapes the tech landscape, the push for renewable energy will remain essential. Renewable energy deals allow companies to manage energy costs while preparing for a future with greater energy demands from advanced AI systems and data centers.
